Discovering Ogdensburg's Treasures

2 min read

Ogdensburg's history isn't just in old buildings. It's in the streets we walk every day, the river that shaped the city, and the stories people still tell about growing up here.

Why It Matters Here

Local history tells us who we are and where we came from. When we preserve it, the next generation gets to learn from it, too — and it brings neighbors closer together.

At the Ogdensburg History Museum, we collect and share those stories before they're lost, from the city's earliest days to its factories, its schools, and its life along the St. Lawrence River.

Places to Explore

  • Ogdensburg History Museum — Explore exhibits that tell the story of one of New York State’s oldest communities.

  • Fort de La Présentation — Ogdensburg's early French settlement and military history, right on the river.

  • Frederic Remington Art Museum — Remington's art in the historic Parish Mansion.

  • Heritage Houses — Take a walk past Ogdensburg's historic homes and see how the city's architecture tells the story of its booms and growth. Most are private homes, so please enjoy them from the sidewalk.

  • Street tours — Take a self-guided walking tour through Ogdensburg's historic streets, including Ford Street and the Heritage Houses, and see the city's past and present side by side.

You don't need a guide or a schedule. Wander at your own pace, stop for photos, and follow whatever catches your eye.

How to Get Involved

  • Visit the museum — Come to a talk, a workshop, or an exhibit at 206 Ford St., and ask questions.

  • Volunteer — Help with preservation projects and museum programs.

  • Share a story — Your family memories are part of Ogdensburg's history, too.

  • Support preservation — Donations and advocacy help keep historic sites and collections going.

  • Become a member of the Ogdensburg History Museum today — Join us and help preserve and share Ogdensburg's history.

Keeping It Alive

Preserving history takes steady care: maintaining old buildings, cataloging artifacts properly, teaching the public, and working together as a community. The museum is a hub for all of that — a place where people can connect with Ogdensburg's past in a real way.

Heritage isn't only for museums or special occasions. It's in festivals, local crafts, family stories, and everyday walks down Ford Street.

Simple ways to keep it going: visit historic sites, share stories with family and friends, support local artisans, and show up for community heritage events.

Discovering Ogdensburg's treasures is a journey — one that connects us to the past and helps build a stronger community future.
