Early Frontiers and Forts

Long before its formal founding, the strategic shores of the St. Lawrence River were home to native communities and early explorers. In 1749, Abbe Francois Picquet established Fort de la Présentation. This vital outpost laid the foundations for the city. The settlement quickly became a crucial crossroads for frontier trade, military strategy, and early river navigation.

The War of 1812 and Growth

Ogdensburg played a pivotal role during the War of 1812. Positioned directly across from Canada, the riverfront witnessed significant military action. Following the war, the community transformed into a thriving maritime port. The opening of railroads and shipping docks accelerated regional commerce. The city grew rapidly as an industrial and cultural hub for St. Lawrence County.

An Era of Industry and Progress

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, industry flourished here. The city became famous for booming silk manufacturing. A vibrant local culture grew, highlighted by teams like the Ogdensburg Maples baseball club. During this golden era, civic landmarks emerged, including the historic 1930 City Hall. Striking architecture like the Seymour House defined the bustling streets.
