Lucky Penny
Celebrating Ogdensburg's 200th Birthday!
Think pocket change is too small to carry real history? Meet the oversized "Lucky Penny" from 1948! This heavy, copper-toned novelty coin was minted to celebrate Ogdensburg’s massive 200th birthday bash. In the mid-20th century, these giant tokens were the ultimate travel souvenirs—part lucky pocket charm, part heavy-duty keepsake, and way too big to accidentally spend at the grocery store.
The front features a dramatic, deeply stamped profile wearing a feathered headdress, flanked by the words "LUCKY PENNY". Flip it over, and you'll find the custom celebration details honoring Ogdensburg’s deep roots, stretching all the way back to the founding of Fort La Présentation in 1748. Generously donated by a member of our community, this fun piece of history reminds us how local folks celebrated civic pride and shared a bit of good fortune nearly eight decades ago!
